Working towards 3d printing for prosthetics...

15/4/2018

We care for a large number of one-legged ducks at our facility. Some ducks come to us with a leg already missing, while in some cases we end up taking them in for amputations due to severe and irreparable injuries.

The ducks adapt very well to using only one leg and are eventually soft released onto our property, and provided with supplemental food in a special feeding shelter.

We don't only deal with missing legs; we also encounter ducks with various degrees of broken beaks (some of you may recall our permanent resident Robo-duck!).

It is early days but we are now working on various plans for incorporating 3D printed prosthetics into the treatment of birds in our care.

Although we are currently fundraising in order to purchase a 3D printer for our own use, we are also investigating the possibility of getting some expert help in this endeavor.

With your help, we can get one-step closer to something that has the potential for improving the quality of life for native and non-native species in the future.

If you follow this link to our "Give A Little" page, you'll find a fundraiser specifically dedicated to the purchase of a 3D printer; note that, as our plans progress, these funds might alternatively be used for materials needed for 3D printing done off site.

Thank you for your support - every little bit helps the birds!
